The Beginner’s Guide To Content Marketing
So you’ve decided to promote your existing business on the internet or start a new online business. Just like any industry, the online marketing world has it’s own unfamiliar jargon, terms and buzzwords that may have you scratching your head wondering what they mean. One of those terms that comes up often is “content marketing”.
But before we get into that, it’s important to mention that posting a link to your website all over social media is NOT marketing; that’s called spamming (another online buzzword!). In order to effectively put content marketing into action it is very important to first figure out who your audience is, and no, it’s not everyone.
Now let’s define the first part of “Content Marketing”…
What Is Content?
Once you have established who your audience is, then you can begin to provide them with value. This includes answering questions they have, giving helpful tips, and providing them with information they will find useful and/or entertaining.
On the internet, “content” is a term that refers to any material that a business makes public, either on its website or on its social media networks.
“Content” can be any of the following:
- Web copy (the unchanging wordage found on a website’s homepage, About Us page, Products/Services Page, etc.)
- Images (examples include motivational quotes or funny memes)
- Social media posts (including tweets, Facebook posts, Instagrams, etc.)
Great! So, What Is Content Marketing?
Here is the definition provided by the Content Marketing Institute:
“Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”
Here’s my translation: Content marketing is the process of creating any of the forms of content listed above and sharing it across the internet so that your audience finds it, goes to your website, and eventually buys your product or joins your opportunity because you have earned their trust through all the value you’ve given them.
And that, my friends, is what Content Marketing is. It works really well in conjunction with Attraction Marketing, which is a method used to brand and set yourself apart from every other marketer so that people are attracted to YOU as opposed to only your product, service or opportunity.
